This past year’s major storm, Michael, devastated the Gulf Coast in a manner very similar to that of Katrina when it roared into New Orleans in 2005. The damage of both storms is very real, and the rise of social media has really hammered home the sheer overwhelming destruction that came with Michael.
This is not to downplay the other storms, but with the social media being so ubiquitous, more people shared more information about Michael than previous storms.
This got us at Zohmo thinking. What are the best things to have on hand in the case of an emergency of epic scale? There are plenty of people who are still displaced; schools are still closed with no set time to reopen, and the repair process is slowly moving forward – emphasis on slowly.
Electricity was restored fairly quickly, with “fairly” being around a week for most places. This is a long time to go without power for anyone, especially those who were cut off from the rest of the world. This is why having an iPhone XR battery case on hand is such a good idea. It is the perfect tool in the case of a very real catastrophe.
So, what do you need in a basic emergency kit? There are plenty of things that most people already think of, but there are many more they may not consider. Here is Zohmo's list of recommended items to have in case of an emergency.
Food and water – Plan on a gallon of water per person per day for three days. It should be for drinking first. Food: think non-perishable yet nutrient rich. Trail mixes, dried meat sticks, protein bars, peanut butter, crackers and canned or box juices. You want to minimize the amount of items you may need to carry.
Electronics – All cell phone chargers are a must. A charging case for the iPhone XR is also a good idea. You may find a place to charge a phone will be a luxury. Have plenty of batteries and flashlights. If you have children, certainly have the handheld games, but they need to understand when the battery dies, the game is done for a while.
First Aid – Sterile gloves first and foremost. Band-aids. All prescription medications. Have some OTC medications as well – aspirin, Tylenol and such. Tweezers, scissors. Bandages. Feminine supplies.
Miscellaneous items – Trash bags for dirty and soiled clothes. A pair of pliers. Glasses and glasses cases. Contact lenses. Board games.
This is not an exhaustive list by any means, but it is a start. One thing we did not mention but want to is the importance of communication. This is why an iPhone battery case can be a real lifesaver. As cell phones die because of low batteries and no way to charge them, your iPhone XR charging case could be the tool that saves the day for everyone.
